An interesting concern about education in the Philippines was raised during the Sonshine Media Network International (SMNI) Presidential debate held on February 15, 2022.
Retired professor Dr. Clarita Carlos, one of the panelists of the SMNI Presidential Debate, urged the presidential candidates to invest in teachers to improve the quality of education in the country.
"If you want to do any policy changes that means you pay attention and you invest on the teacher. Do not invest on an air-conditioned room, a classroom, etc. because this things can happen even under the papaya tree, but if the teacher is bobo, no learning happens.
Education is so pivotal to the life of our nations. You as chief executives, I would plead that you pay attention to empirical evidence that critical variable to effective learning to happen is to invest on the teacher." - Dr. Clarita Carlos, UP Diliman
Education be like raising profiles and standards for teachers
According to Dr. Clarita Carlos, the government should invest on the teachers. She pointed out that learning will still continue even under any circumstances.
She said that the basis of learning are these two factors:
- Mastery of the subject matter by the teacher; and
- Fair level of motivation with the students and their interaction
Regardless of what kind of intelligence you posses, qualities like hard work, resilience, being teachable, and a willingness to be corrected and admit that we don't know everything also come into play in the development of any kind of intelligence. In Japan, they teach children values before they teach them academics.
It is not air-conditioned rooms, not buildings, not classrooms; but it teaches the children the way they should be. and when they grow up they shall not depart from it.
